if youโve ever dreamt of trading in your fast-paced lifestyle for the laid-back charm of a Mexican beach town, Rikiโs story might just inspire you to take the leap. In our latest video, we interview Ulrikeโknown as Rikiโwho shares her journey from life in the U.S. to settling down in Sayulita, a vibrant town on Mexicoโs Pacific coast.
โIโm originally from Germany, but I lived in the U.S. for many years… I just wanted something different.โ
From Germany to the U.S. to Sayulita: A Global Journey
Rikiโs relocation story isnโt your typical one. Born in Germany she later moved to the United States, where she spent most of her adult life. But like many expats we talk to, she eventually found herself searching for something more, a deeper sense of connection, community, and freedom.
โI got a little tired of the U.S. I was living in Northern California, which is a beautiful place, but the lifestyle started to feel too much; too hectic, too expensive. I got here, and I just felt at home.โ
Her quest led her to Sayulita, a town known for its surf culture, colorful streets, and bohemian vibe. And as she explains, it was love at first sight.
Life in Sayulita: Community, Simplicity, and Joy
One of the recurring themes in Rikiโs story is the strong sense of community she found in Sayulita. Itโs not just the warm weather or the beautiful beachesโitโs the people.
โThereโs a different vibe here. People talk to each other, they help each other… Thereโs a sense of community that I never really had in the U.S.โ
She also touches on the slower pace of lifeโa refreshing change from the hustle culture many feel stuck in elsewhere.
โLife is a little more simple here, and I love that. I donโt need all the things I thought I needed before.โ
๐ธ Cost of Living and Practical Tips
Riki doesnโt sugarcoat the reality; Sayulita is no longer the undiscovered secret it once was. Prices have gone up, and sheโs honest about that. But she still finds it affordable, especially compared to the U.S.
โYou can live well here, even with a modest income. I donโt spend a lot, and I have everything I need.โ
A house in Sayulita will go for around $400k USD these days with a property tax of about $400 USD a year.
However, costs for everyday things are still significantly less in Mexico than they are North of the border. For example: electricity, water, services, local markets and groceries, transportation, healthcare and entertainment.
It’s not uncommon for a couple to live comfortably on $3k a month in Sayulita.
Final Thoughts: Why Riki is Staying in Mexico
โI came here thinking Iโd stay a few months… and that was ten years ago.โ
Rikiโs story is a reminder that sometimes, the best things in life happen when youโre willing to embrace the unknown. Her honest reflections on life in Sayulita offer a beautiful glimpse into whatโs possible when you step out of your comfort zone and choose a life that truly fulfills you.
